Description

Basil originated in India and was brought to the West by traders.
For centuries, Basil has been at home in Europe and is particularly appreciated in Italian and French cuisine.

Basil tastes aromatic, spicy and is slightly cooling.
As a spice the leaves are used fresh and dried. The annual plant grows up to 50 cm high.
Fresh basil leaves give off a heady scent which quickly disappears when cooking. For this reason it is best added to your dish towards the end of cooking time or right before serving.

Even dried and shredded, the smell of the herb is very summery and therefore goes well with all fresh vegetables like tomato soup, sauces and salads. It also goes well with hot peppers, eggplant, cabbage, beans, spinach, cucumbers, thick vegetable soups, peas, lentil and white bean dishes, hearty stews, cabbage, spicy salads and herbal sauces, vinaigrettes and raw vegetables or vegetable juices.

A well-known example of a basil recipe is insalata caprese (Capri salad). This salad combines tomato slices topped with mozzarella and basil werden. Basil goes very well with oregano, thyme, and rosemary.

Basil can be used in any classical combination with tomatoes and garlic, especially for pizza.

Tip:
Basil can be made into a pesto sauce with olive oil and can keep up to six months in the refrigerator.
