The "Mostviertel" cider region is located in south-western Lower Austria and became very popular in the 1990s. Dedicated cider producers planted new orchards, modernised the press technology and founded a "cider gallery" in the Ardagger Abbey. Around 300 different types of pears grow in the Mostviertel, many of which are used for making cider. Most of the cider produced is single-variety and of the best quality.
