A Nebbiolo from Rust, Austria? Surprised to hear that?
The story of this wine begins in 1987, when Paul Triebaumer, Günter's father, brought some Nebbiolo vines from expert vintner Elio Altare in La Morra, Piedmont and planted them in the Ried Plachen area of Rust, Austria. However, since this vine was not covered by Austrian wine production regulations, special authorisation from the Burgenland government was required to produce it.
As a tribute to his father, now deceased, Günter decided to bottle this wine again. The name Erster Nebel (German: first fog) is derived from the name of the Nebbiolo grape which owes its name to the fact that the grapes ripen late and are harvested during the first foggy days of autumn. This is also the reason why there are often very wide vintage fluctuations with Nebbiolo wines, especially depending on how the autumn that year turns out.
Note that the name Erster Nebel was also used to name their highest quality Blaufränkisch wine until the year 2000, a wine that was refined with a small percentage of Nebbiolo.
This well-structured red wine with fruity hints of plum is an absolute rarity which shows up only in the best vintages. After a year in used barriques, the wine slowly begins to show its full potential.
A true surprise for those who love red wines.
